Gamecocks Fall to Wildcats
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (6-2-2, 1-2) dropped its Sun Belt Conference match to Kentucky (2-2-4, 1-0-2) 2-0 Friday night (Oct. 4) at Stone Stadium. It was Carolina’s annual Pink Out match.
On the night, the Gamecocks outshot the Wildcats 15-11, while shots on goal were tied 5-5. UK also held a 5-to-4 advantage in corner kicks. Carolina goalkeeper Filip Versterre finished the night with three saves.
The Gamecocks had to play from behind early, as the Wildcats netted a pair of goals off corner kicks in the 17th and 21st minutes. Carolina outshot Kentucky 5-to-2 in the first half, but still trailed at the break.
South Carolina pushed the offensive attack to start the second half, nearly scoring on several occasions in the first seven minutes. Through the first 16 minutes the Gamecocks had three shots on goal and seven total shots.
Carolina had one final opportunity when it was awarded a penalty kick with eight seconds left, but the Kentucky goalkeeper made the stop to conclude the match.
The Gamecocks return to action October 11 when they travel to Georgia State for a 7 p.m. match.
