Gamecock Pair Continues in ITA Regionals
CARY, N.C. – The 2024 ITA Carolina Regional Championships singles quarterfinals will feature two Gamecocks for the second-straight season. Junior Lucas Andrade da Silva and sophomore Sean Daryabeigi, who was one of last year’s quarterfinalists, posted straight-set victories to keep their tournament runs going strong.
With a pair of wins on Friday, da Silva matched his previous best showing at the event and wasted little time Saturday topping that effort. Facing Duke’s Connor King, the Gamecocks’ Brazilian overwhelmed his opponent 6-2, 6-2.
In today’s round of 16 match, Daryabeigi battled No. 51 Wissam Abderrahman from the opening serve with both sets going down to the wire. The South Carolina sophomore scored a late service break to claim the opening set 7-5, then had an even tighter set on his hands in the second. The back-and-forth set went to a tiebreak where Daryabeigi finally broke through, steamrolling Abderrahman when it mattered most to secure the 7-5, 7-6 (2) victory and his return to the ITA Regional quarterfinals.
In doubles, No. 82 da Silva and Jelani Sarr, who are the tournament’s eight seed, saw their run end just short of the quarterfinals. The duo fought through a tiebreak win in the second round, much like the first, topping Wake Forest’s Joaquin Guilleme and Nikola Parichkov 8-7 (4). In Saturday afternoon’s round of 16 action against Clemson’s Max Damm and Viktor Markov, the Gamecocks were again in a tight set but their rivals stayed just ahead through the final shot to take the 8-6 victory.
Complete draws, schedules and results for the ITA Carolina Regional Championships will be post on the ITA Tournament Page. Matches are streaming live via PlaySight.
Under the new format for NCAA Singles and Doubles Championships, players and doubles teams in the ITA Regional Championships can qualify right into the NCAA Championships bracket. The two singles finalists in each region will punch their ticket directly into the NCAA Singles Championships, and the doubles champion from each region will join them in the NCAA Doubles Championships.
