Women's Soccer Picks Up Point Against the Rebels

OXFORD, MS – The No. 23 South Carolina women’s soccer team (6-1-6, 3-1-2) head home with a point on the road against Ole Miss (5-10-1, 0-6-1) after drawing with the Rebels 2-2 on Sunday.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The first half saw even chances from both teams through the first six minutes, with each side taking a shot and each keeper grabbing a save
In the 10^th minute, freshman Katie Shea Collins turned on the boosters and created space past two Rebel defenders to go one-on-one with Ole Miss keeper Shu Ohba, ultimately winning the battle and sinking it into the bottom right corner of the net to put the Gamecocks up 1-0 early
- The goal was Collins’ seventh of the season, the second-most on the team
For 30 more minutes the two teams evenly shared possession, with both defensive lines not allowing a single shot
In the 39^th minute however, Rebel Kate Smith sent in a rocket from outside the right corner of the box, sweeping past the fingertips of Gamecocks keeper Tina Tsaousis to give Ole Miss the equalizer heading into the locker room
In the second half, both teams came out swinging, going shot for shot throughout the first 20 minutes
The Gamecocks then picked up the tempo, taking seven consecutive attempts at goal without an answer from the Rebels
In the 75^th minute, a scramble in front of the net was met by an Ole Miss handball call, awarding the Gamecocks a penalty shot
Fifth-year Cat Barry lined it up and sent it into the top right corner to put the Gamecocks up 2-1 with just 15 minutes to go
- Barry’s goal was the 10^th of the year, tying her career-high for goals in a season
- It was also the 43^rd goal of her career, moving her to the No. 2 spot overall in the South Carolina record book for career goals
Just 10 minutes later, the same fate was given to South Carolina, with a handball called on a Gamecock defender to set the Rebels up for their own PK
Ole Miss’ Kelly Brady took the shot and was initially met by a save from Tsaousis, but a deflection off the Gamecock keeper allowed Brady to step back in and make things 2-2 to give the Rebels their first point of the season in conference play
