Gamecocks Defeat Alabama 3-1 in Stone Stadium
COLUMBIA, SC – South Carolina women’s soccer (7-1-6, 4-1-2) picked up another three points at home Friday night, taking down Alabama (8-4-5, 1-2-5) 3-1 thanks in part to a brace by freshman Katie Shea Collins.
- After getting off the first two shots of the game, rookie Katie Shea Collins took advantage on a third, speeding up the left side of the field after a ball from fifth-year Cat Barry set her up one-on-one with a Crimson Tide defender, who she then escaped to send it past Alabama keeper Ellie Lanyi to put the Gamecocks up 1-0 in the 25th minute
- After a rapid fire of three shots by Alabama, a handball call on South Carolina’s Gracie Falla set the Crimson Tide up for a penalty kick, their fourth of the season
- Alabama’s Nedya Sawan set up the PK and converted in the 43rd minute to send the teams into halftime knotted up at 1-1
- After a possession battle through the first 10 minutes of the second half, Collins took things back into her own hands, making her way up the right side of the field with another ball from Barry and sliding it into the bottom left of the net to put the Gamecocks back on top 2-1 in the 60th minute
- The scoring didn’t stop there, with sophomore Cuyler Zulauf connecting on a shot from Barry’s third assist of the night to give South Carolina the 3-1 advantage in the 76th minute
- Junior keeper Tina Tsaousis finished the night with five saves, tying for her most this season in conference play (previously five at Georgia, Sept. 19)
Collins’ brace puts her at nine goals this season, the second-most on the team. The freshman has also scored the first goal of the game in five contests so far.
