Verzyl and Turner Earn SEC Weekly Honors

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Two Gamecocks from the South Carolina swimming & diving team earned SEC weekly awards, announced by the league office today. Sophie Verzyl picked up her third consecutive Female Diver of the Week honor while Ryan Turner received the Garnet & Black’s first weekly award of the season for the swimming program after being named Male Freshman of the Week.

Verzyl competed at University of North Carolina Wilmington this past Friday, winning both her events against the Seahawks. The junior led the Gamecock sweep on the 1-meter, taking first place with 319.65 points. In the 3-meter, Verzyl broke her second pool record of the 2024-25 campaign with a new season best score of 398.03.

Turner competed in three individual events at South Carolina’s dual meet with Queens University of Charlotte last Friday, earning eight points for the Garnet & Black to help the men’s program defeat the Royals 165-96. The freshman began the meet taking second place in the 1000 free, his highest finish of the season thus far, with a time of 9:30.57. He continued to contribute for the team in the 200 fly, earning a point after finishing in fifth place. The Florida native concluded the meet after helping complete a Gamecock sweep in the 500 free, placing third after clocking a 4:40.37.

The Gamecocks return to the Carolina Natatorium on Wed., Nov. 20 to Fri., Nov. 22 to host the Gamecock Invitational. The divers head to Athens, Georgia during the same time to compete in the UGA Invitational.
