Gamecocks Named USBWA Team of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball was named USBWA Team of the Week, the organization announced today, following the Gamecocks’ pair of top-10 victories, which give them four nationally ranked wins already this season.
The Gamecocks opened the week with an 81-70 win over then-No. 8/9 Duke at Colonial Life Arena. South Carolina led by as many as 25 and staved off a late Duke rally to pick up the double-digit victory. The Gamecocks shot 57.4 percent from the field and scored 48 of their 81 points in the paint, led by Chloe Kitt’s 21-point, 11-rebound double-double.
On Sunday, South Carolina traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Hoopfest Women’s Basketball Classic. Facing then-No. 9/13 TCU, the Gamecocks overwhelmed the Horned Frogs in the second quarter 24-9 en route to an 85-52 victory – their second 30-point win over a ranked team this season. MiLaysia Fulwiley led the scoring with 20 points, and three other Gamecocks netted double figures. South Carolina forced 20 TCU turnovers, which yielded 30 points.
Five of the Gamecocks’ 10 games this season have been against ranked opponents, and South Carolina has 4-1 record in those outings. The remaining schedule includes eight more games against teams ranked in this week’s top 25
South Carolina, ranked #3 in both polls this week, wraps up exam week with a Sunday contest against USF. Tipoff at Colonial Life Arena is set for 2 p.m.
