Men’s Tennis Begins Spring Season with Pair of Wins

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 15 South Carolina men’s tennis began the spring portion of the 2024-25 season on a high note on Sunday, picking up a pair of shutout wins over Furman and The Citadel.

Furman

At the No.1 position, Connor Thomson and Casey Hoole claimed the first doubles win of the day in dominant fashion, defeating Cole Burnam and Connor Laymon 6-0. Max Stenzer and Atakan Karahan ultimately clinched the doubles point for the Gamecocks, nearly sweeping the duo of Nicolas Dispas and John Rado 6-1.

In singles action all six Gamecocks won their matches in straight sets. The freshman started things off strong for the Garnet & Black as Karahan put up the first singles point for South Carolina after dominating his opponent 6-0, 6-1. Gabe Avram continued the momentum, shutting out Cole Burnam 6-0, 6-0 to claim the next point. Daryabeigi finished his match next, claiming the win 6-1, 6-0 to put the Gamecocks up 4-0 over Furman.

Stenzer, Thomson and Sarr grabbed the next three singles points for South Carolina to ultimately shut out Furman 7-0.

Citadel

Hoole paired up with Daryabeigi in the No. 1 spot for doubles against The Citadel. The two started off competition against the Bulldogs on a high note, defeating Noah Van Dyke and Reece Beckendorf 6-1 to claim the first doubles win. Avram and Cole Henceroth clinched the doubles point with a perfect set, winning 6-0 against Bradey Minnich and Nick Stroumpis.

Avram then grabbed the Gamecocks’ second point over The Citadel after nearly picking up his second singles shutout of the day, topping Anthony Osipov 6-0, 6-1. Daryabeigi put up the same score against Ted Bagwell for his second singles win of the day.

Karahan, Stenzer, Hoole and Sarr wrapped up the match after winning in straight sets over their opponents.

The Gamecocks return home on Thursday, January 16, to host No. 5 Virginia at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center with a 5:00 p.m. start time.
