Gamecocks Named USBWA Team of the Week
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball was named USBWA Team of the Week for the second time this season, the organization announced today. The Gamecocks’ pair of wins came by an average of 29.0 points and extended their SEC-record conference regular-season win streak to 51. Head coach Dawn Staley’s team also became the first team to post five wins over ranked opponents this season.
No. 2/2 South Carolina took the floor last week for the first time following a season-ending injury to All-SEC forward Ashlyn Watkins. The Gamecocks dominated Texas A&M in their SEC home opener 90-49 with six players scoring in double figures, led by freshman Joyce Edwards’ 19-point, 10-rebound double-double. The Gamecocks shot over 60 percent in the first and fourth quarters.
Facing No. 5/6 Texas as a conference rival for the first time as a conference rival, South Carolina put on a defensive clinic in a 67-50 victory. The Gamecocks held the nation’s fourth-ranked offensive team to just nine first-quarter points and 22 points in the first half. Meanwhile, the Gamecocks shot 71.4 percent in the first half to take a 39-22 lead that was never in jeopardy.
For the week, four Gamecocks average double figures with Edwards’ 14.5 points per game leading the way. MiLaysia Fulwiley was close behind with 12. 5 points per game to go along with her five steals. Guard Raven Johnson led the way on the glass with 7.0 rebounds per game with forwards Chloe Kitts and Sania Feagin next in line with 6.5 rebounds per game each.
South Carolina is back in action this week, continue a stretch of five games against ranked SEC foes at No. 19/19 Alabama on Thu., Jan. 16. Tipoff will be at 7 p.m. with the game streaming on SECN+.
