Gamecocks Come Up Short at Georgia, 71-60

Jamarii Thomas had 19 points again to lead all scorers in the SEC road game

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) — Asa Newell scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Georgia to a 71-60 victory over South Carolina on Tuesday night.

Georgia (15-6, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) snapped a four-game skid while South Carolina (10-11, 0-8) extended its losing streak to eight games.

Dakota Leffew added 14 points for the Bulldogs, who never trailed and shot 51% (26 of 51) from the field. Silas Demary Jr. scored 12 points and Dylan James had 10.

Jamarii Thomas scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half to lead South Carolina. Collin Murray-Boyles added 18 points.

Georgia opened on a 14-3 run and led 35-21 at the break. Demary Jr. scored 10 first-half points and Newell and James added eight apiece. Blue Cain’s 3-pointer with 4:44 left gave the Bulldogs their largest lead, 63-47, with 4:44 to play.

Georgia is 12-1 at home that includes double-digit wins over ranked Kentucky and Oklahoma. Its only home loss was against top-ranked Auburn, 70-68 on Jan. 18.

KEY STATS

  • Georgia took advantage of cold shooting the opening 20 minutes as Carolina was just 6-of-22 (27.3%) and 1-of-7 (14.3%) from behind the arc. The Bulldogs allowed just one Gamecock field goal the final 10 minutes of the opening half.
  • Carolina had issues with turnovers again with 17 giveaways that led to 10 points for the Bulldogs.

NOTABLES

  • Senior transfer guard Jamarii Thomas had a game-high 19 points again to lead the team. He went 6-of-12 from the floor and 3-of-5 from deep. He added three assists and a pair of steals.
  • Sophomore forward Collin Murray-Boyles had 18 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He added five rebounds, a team-high five assists, two steals and two blocks.

South Carolina returns home to face another top-15 opponent as the Gamecocks welcome No. 13/15 Texas A&M (15-5, 4-3 SEC) on Saturday night to Colonial Life Arena. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. (ET) on SEC Network with Roy Philpott (pxp) and Terrence Oglesby (analyst) on the call.
