Gamecocks Set to Host Midweek Doubleheader
COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 16 South Carolina men’s tennis returns home for a midweek doubleheader on Jan. 29. The Gamecocks will first face Queens University of Charlotte at 10 a.m., followed by a matchup against the College of Charleston at 2 p.m.
The matches will take place on the outdoor courts at the Carolina Tennis Center. Fans are encouraged to park at the metered spots on Heyward Street or at the Carolina Indoor Tennis Center and walk over to the facility as the pit will be closed for parking.
Gamecock Notables
- The Gamecocks enter the doubleheader with a 3-2 record after dropping one game at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Florida. South Carolina fell to No. 15 San Diego 4-1 to open the weekend but managed to bounce back and sweep North Florida 4-0.
- Against the Toreros the Gamecocks started off slow, dropping the doubles point. They attempted to rally back, claiming first set victories on five of the six courts. Atakan Karahan then leveled out the score to 1-1 after winning singles in straight sets of 6-2, 6-3. San Diego surged ahead, winning singles on courts 1-3 to secure the clinch.
- South Carolina broke its two-game losing streak in its win against North Florida on Jan. 25. In two 6-1 doubles victories, Casey Hoole and Sean Daryabeigi alongside Lucas da Silva and Jelani Sarr set the momentum early. In singles play, Daryabeigi (No. 55) led a five-win charge, going 5-0 in his opening set before closing it with a 6-1 score. The sophomore picked up the first singles in for the Gamecocks, defeating his opponent 6-2 in the second set. Karahan put South Carolina within one point of clinching, topping his opponent in straight sets of 6-4. Hoole ultimately secured the 4-0 win after a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
- Daryabeigi(No. 55) and Sarr (No. 77), earned ITA Singles Rankings in the final fall edition of the list. Karahan and Sarr were ranked No. 85 for doubles.
- South Carolina ranks No. 16 in the latest edition of the ITA Top 25 Coaches Poll, released on Jan. 22.
Scouting the Royals
- The Royals are 0-2 for the spring season entering tomorrow’s match. The team opened 2025 falling 0-7 to the defending AAC Champion Charlotte.
- Queens took on Wofford on Jan. 25, dropping the match 2-5 after securing two singles wins from Laurenz Blickwede and Gavin Ryan. Blickwede topped his opponent in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0 while Ryan won in a three-set comeback, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Scouting the Cougars
- College of Charleston begins their 2025 dual match season against the Gamecocks.
- The Cougars ended the 2023-24 season with a 12-11 overall record going 1-4 in conference play.
- The season ended with Charleston falling 0-4 in the Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Championship quarterfinals against UNCW.
Series History
- The match against Queens will be the first matchup in program history for the two schools.
