Joyce Edwards Named SEC Freshman of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina forward Joyce Edwards picked up SEC co-Freshman of the Week honors, the league office announced today. It is her third SEC honor of the season.

The Camden, S.C., native once again led the Gamecock offense this week against a pair of ranked opponents, scoring 16.0 points per game on 54.2 percent shooting. Her 14 points against #5/4 LSU included six in the fourth quarter to stymie the Tigers’ late comeback attempt.

At #18/17 Tennessee, the first six of her team-high 18 points came during a steadying run in the first quarter and included three rebounds as the Gamecocks rallied to cut a nine-point deficit to one before the end of the period. Her four points in the fourth quarter stopped a 10-2 Tennessee run, and her calm with in-bounds passes once the Lady Vols pulled within six late in the game helped the Gamecocks secure the win.

The freshman has led the team in scoring a team-high nine times, including five games against ranked opponents and each of the last four games.

On the season, Edwards averages a team high 12.4 points and 4.9 rebounds on 56.3 percent shooting and is second on the team with 25 steals. Her 15 games in double-figure scoring are the most on the team, and she has been the team’s rebounder three times.

South Carolina, ranked #2 in this week’s AP Poll, is back in action on Sun., Feb. 2, hosting a Noon tipoff against Auburn. South Carolina will retire the jersey of four-time All-American, three-time SEC Player of the Year and three-time WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson in a pregame ceremony.
