
Gamecocks Sweep UNCW at Home
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 17 South Carolina men’s tennis team got back in the win column on Friday afternoon, sweeping UNCW 7-0 at home. The Gamecocks picked up two wins in doubles action to get an early lead over the Seahawks before completing the sweep by fighting back on a few tie breaks in singles to finish the match.
Jelani Sarr and Atakan Karahan struck first, winning their doubles match 6-3 from the No. 2 position. Connor Thomson and Lucas da Silva officially clinched the doubles point on court 4, winning 6-2 from the No. 1 position after going on a 4-0 run to begin the match.
Sean Daryabeigi advanced the Gamecocks to 2-0 after dominantly winning his match in straight sets of 6-3, 6-0. From court 2, da Silva earned the next point for South Carolina after claiming both sets 6-4, 6-2. Karahan officially clinched the match for the Garnet & Black with a 7-5, 6-4 victory. Sarr won a tightly contested first set in a tie break 7-6 before following up with a 6-4 win for his second to make the score 5-0 for the Gamecocks.
Casey Hoole and Gabe Avram each won their first sets but dropped the second to force a deciding set. Hoole fought hard through a super tiebreak, bouncing back from a 7-2 deficit to come out on top 10-7. Avram rounded out the day with a 6-3 win in his third set after coming back from being down 1-3 to complete the 7-0 sweep.
