Gamecocks Wrap Up Opening Weekend in Jacksonville

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – Gamecock beach volleyball finished competition at the Dolphin Duals Sunday in Jacksonville, winning duals against the host Dolphins and South Florida. South Carolina finishes the opening weekend of the season with a 2-1 record after winning both matchups by 4-1 scores.

Against Jacksonville, the Gamecocks enjoyed a strong start with sweeps on courts two and four. Riley Whitesides and Julia Waugh picked up their first win together with a 21-10, 21-14 sweep on two, Abigail Lagemann and Sadie Nelson won their third-straight three-set match with a 21-17, 19-21, 15-13 win on four. In the second wave, the Dolphins got on the board with a win on court one, but the Gamecocks closed out with Lauren Lawson and VB Trost on court five and Jordan Benoit and Evie Ziffer on court three both winning in three sets.

The weekend finale against South Florida is considered an exhibition, as the Bulls are not competing formally until next spring. The Gamecocks clinched the team win after the first three results, winning on courts two, four and five. Kennedy Westendorff made her season debut on court five with Lawson and earned the clinching win, 24-22, 19-21, 15-4. After the Bulls got a three-set win on court three, Morgan Downs and Jolie Cranford wrapped up the weekend with a comeback win on court one, 16-21, 21-17, 15-10.

UP NEXT
The Gamecocks return home for their next competition, hosting the Wheeler Beach Bash on Saturday, March 1. Carolina hosts Austin Peay and UAB for duals at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
