
Gamecocks Set for Texas Road Trip
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The No. 26 South Carolina men’s tennis team continues its road stretch this week with a pair of top 15 matchups in Texas. The Gamecocks take on No. 12 Texas A&M on Fri., March 28 for a 7:00 p.m. (ET) match and then travel to Austin to play No. 4 Texas in a 2:00 p.m. (ET) match on Sun., March 30.
Gamecock Notables
- Records: 13-5 (overall), 7-2 (SEC), 9-1 (home), 3-3 (away)
- The Gamecocks rank third in the SEC, only trailing this weekend’s opponents.
- South Carolina split its matches last week, defeating LSU 4-2 but losing in a heartbreaker against then-No. 20 Mississippi State 3-4. The Gamecocks took the 1-0 advantage against the Tigers with doubles wins from Connor Thomson & Lucas Da Silva (6-3) and Casey Hoole & Sean Daryabeigi (6-3). Atakan Karahan (6-3, 6-4) and Hoole (6-3, 6-4) each won their matches to put the Gamecocks within one point of clinching. Daryabeigi completed a three-set comeback to defeat his opponent 6 (5)-7, 6-0, 6-0 and secure the South Carolina win.
- In the Mississippi match, the Bulldogs claimed the doubles point with wins from the No. 1 and 2 positions to earn an early lead. Karahan (7-6, 6-2), Thomson (6-4, 7-6) and Daryabeigi (7-6, 6-7, 1-0) each won their singles matches, but the comeback fell just short for the Garnet and Black as the Bulldogs picked up victories on the remaining courts.
- Daryabeigi had a perfect weekend, winning his doubles and singles matches against both opponents.
- Thomson (No. 54), Daryabeigi (No. 82) and Jelani Sarr (No. 106) represent the Gamecocks in the ITA rankings. Da Silva & Thomson are ranked a season-high No. 15 and boast an 8-2 record so far this season. The two are the fifth highest ranked duo in the SEC. Karahan & Sarr (No. 87) are 6-3 in dual matches.
- Daryabeigi leads the team with a 13-3 singles record, riding on a five-match win streak. Hoole has 10 singles wins while Thomson has seven, entering this weekend on a five-match win streak as well.
Scouting the Aggies
- Records: 14-5 (overall), 7-1 (SEC), 6-1 (home), 4-3 (away)
- The Aggies rank second in the SEC standings.
- Texas A&M’s lone SEC loss came from then-No. 3 Texas 1-4. The Aggies are on a seven-match winning streak and are coming off of a 4-0 sweep over No. 50 Ole Miss.
- The top ranked Aggie Theo Papamalamis (No. 32) is 10-4 this season followed by JC Roddick (No. 43) who is 8-6 in dual matches. Togan Tokac & Papamalamis are No. 30 in duos with a 5-2 record. Tokac & Giulio Perego (No. 50) and Tokac & Luke Casper (No. 51) round out the doubles rankings for the Aggies.
Scouting the Longhorns
- Records: 17-3 (overall), 8-0 (SEC), 12-0 (home), 3-2 (away)
- The Longhorns are on a three-match winning streak, coming off of a 4-3 win at LSU. The team hosts No. 35 Kentucky ahead of their match against the Gamecocks.
- Texas has four players in the ITA rankings for singles – Timo Legout (No. 3), Sebastian Gorzny (No. 19), Pierre-Yves Bailly (No. 46) and Jonah Braswell (No. 53). In dual matches, Legout is 13-2, Bailly is 13-1, Gorzny is 10-7 and Braswell is 10-4.
- Legout & Lucas Brown come in at No. 8 in doubles with an 8-6 record in dual matches this season.
Series History
- The Aggies lead the all-time series 6-16. The Gamecocks last defeated Texas A&M in 2023.
- The Longhorns lead the all-time series 1-9. The Gamecocks last defeated Texas in 1978 in the two teams’ first meeting. This will be the first match between the two programs since Texas joined the SEC.
