COLUMBIA, SC – The No. 16 South Carolina women’s soccer team defeated No. 25 Ohio State 1-0 on Thursday evening at Stone Stadium in front of 5,800 fans, the sixth most in program history. The Gamecocks’ game-winning goal came from freshman Mackenzie Johnson in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Gamecocks and Buckeyes battled it out for possession for the first 30 minutes of the first half. South Carolina found a spark and finished the half with three shots to carry momentum into the locker room
- Just 45 seconds into the second half, sophomore Madden McDonald crossed the ball to the top of the six-yard box and found Johnson, who headed it into the lower left corner off of a bounce
- The goal was Johnson’s second game winner in three games and McDonald earned an assist for the second game in a row
- Ohio State threatened from just outside the 18-yard box with less than seven minutes to go. Gamecock goalkeeper senior Tina Tsaousis made a leaping grab on the cross to eliminate the chance on goal
