Gamecocks Hit the Road for Washington, D.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 10 South Carolina women’s soccer (5-0-1) hits the road this week to Washington, D.C., to take on American University (0-4-1) on Thursday, Sept. 4 at 1 p.m. and No. 16 Georgetown (2-0-2)  on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. for the second ranked matchup of the season.

LAST TIME OUT

The Gamecocks defeated Georgia State 3-0 on Sunday night. Junior Cuyler Zuluaf, senior Taylor Bloom, and senior Kinley Brown each scored a goal.

South Carolina had three shots on goal in the first 15 minutes, while dominating possession. In the 15th minute, they secured the early lead as sophomore Katie Shae Collins crossed the ball from the right side, finding Zulauf, who connected the ball to the net. At the half, the Gamecocks had 14 shots on goal, two shots short of surpassing the most shots in a single game this season.

In the 60th minute, the Gamecocks extended the lead as Bloom found the net with an assist from freshman Alexa Pino. This was both Bloom’s first goal and Pino’s first assist of the season. To extend the lead further, in the 79th minute, Brown pushed the ball into the net, following a blocked shot by junior Autumn Cayelli off the Panthers’ keeper.

Senior goalkeeper Maria Kemp had two saves in her first in-game appearance of her career. The win marked a continued undefeated record for the Gamecocks at 5-0-1.

SCOUTING THE EAGLES

Thursday’s game against American will be the first in program history for South Carolina. The Eagles enter the match coming off a 3-1 loss to William & Mary on the road.

The Eagles are looking for their first win of the season.

SCOUTING THE HOYAS

Sunday’s match against Georgetown will be the third in program history. The Hoyas first defeated the Gamecocks 1-0 in 2021 (May 1), and the two teams’ last meeting in 2024 ended in a 2-2 tie (Sept. 12). Returner Kinley Brown scored a goal off an assist from returner Cuyler Zulauf.

The Hoyas will first travel to Vanderbilt on Thursday (Sept. 4) before returning home to host South Carolina. They enter the games coming off a 1-1 tie at Virginia to remain undefeated at 2-0-2.
