Gamecocks Collect 13 Wins at ITA Regionals
CARY, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team wrapped up five days of competition at the ITA Regionals Championship hosted by Duke University, picking up seven total doubles wins, which included a pair advancing to the semifinals round, and six singles wins.
In singles, Lucas da Silva put together a dominant run in the East flight of the main draw, advancing all the way to the Round of 16. After opening with a 6-4, 6-4 win over North Carolina’s Anthony Wright, da Silva battled back from a set down to defeat Clemson’s Marko Mesarovic 3-6, 6-1, 7-6 (4), and continued his momentum with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Wake Forest’s Joaquin Guilleme.
Several other Gamecocks notched opening round wins in the main draw, including Sean Daryabeigi, who topped Wake Forest’s Dominick Mosejczuk 6-3, 6-4; Max Stenzer, who claimed a straight-sets win over UNC Asheville’s Jip Mens 6-3, 7-6 (4); Charlie Swaine, who rallied past Charleston’s Ram Mude 4-6, 6-0, 6-1; and Gabe Avram, who earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory against Coastal Carolina’s Enzo Garutti.
In doubles, the duo of Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer led the way with an impressive run to the semifinals. The pair opened with an 8-6 victory over a pair from NC State, then went on to defeat a duo from the College of Charleston 8-4 in the Round of 32. Continuing their momentum, they topped UNCG 8-5 in the Round of 16 and outlasted UNC’s Nicholas Mangiapane and Logan Zapp 8-6 in the quarterfinals before falling 6-4, 6-4 in the semifinals to their second consecutive Tar Heel duo Xu and Ratiu.
Paul Barbier Gazeu and Lucas da Silva also had a strong showing, earning wins over in state rival Clemson (8-6) and a UNC Asheville duo (8-3) to reach the Round of 16. Atakan Karahan and Charlie Swaine added another first-round victory for the Gamecocks, taking down their opponents from Davidson 8-5.
The Gamecocks return to North Carolina next weekend for the Wake Forest Invitational Oct. 31 – Nov. 2 before rounding out the regular season at the ITA Sectional Championship Nov. 6 – Nov. 9.
