Daryabeigi, Barbier Gazeu Shine at Wake Forest Invitational
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team turned in a dominant performance over the weekend, capturing two singles wins and one doubles victory in the Wake Forest Invitational.
In the East Draw A1 singles, Sean Daryabeigi went on an impressive five-match run to claim the title. After winning in straight-sets over Duke’s Saahith Jayaraman in the Round of 16, he battled back from a set down in back-to-back matches against Virginia’s Douglas Yaffa and UNC Charlotte’s Vasco Prata to reach the final. The junior closed out the tournament in strong fashion, defeating Duke’s Alexander Visser 6-4, 7-5 to claim the title and defend the No. 1 seed.
Paul Barbier Gazeu made it a Gamecock sweep of the East Draw, stringing together four victories to claim the title of the A2 singles section. He opened with a gritty three-set win over James Madison’s Ryan Morgan, then defeated NC State’s Charlie Camus and Duke’s Dylan Long in straight sets to reach the final. Barbier Gazeu closed out his singles performances for the weekend with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over ETSU’s Martin Puerto to secure the title.
In the South Draw, sophomore Gabe Avram captured the A1 singles title after advancing through the semifinals due to injury from his opponent and then topping JMU’s Esteve Agusti in a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory. Freshman Charlie Swaine also made a deep run in the A2 bracket, rallying for a semifinal win before falling in the championship match to VCU’s Leon Zaorski.
The Gamecocks also shined in doubles play, with Daryabeigi and Barbier Gazeu clinching the East Draw A2 Doubles win. The duo edged Cleveland State’s Lincoln Battle and Carl Gedlitschka in a tight 7-6(8) quarterfinal before rolling through their next two rounds, which included a 6-2 win in the final over UNC Charlotte’s Moritz Muenster and Emilio Sanchez. In the East A1 doubles, Swaine and Avram advanced to the final before narrowly falling 6-4 to Duke’s Visser and Teddy Truwit.
