Men’s Soccer Season Comes to a Close to No. 16 West Virginia
COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina men’s soccer team (7-9-2, 1-6-2) fell 2-1 to No. 16 West Virginia (12-3-2, 7-2) Tuesday night (Nov. 4) in it season finale.
Ethan Ballek scored the only goal in the first half coming in the 16th minute. Ballek capitalized on the corner kick clear from Loïc Sany Kong. He took it nearly the entire distance of the field and drilled it home into the right corner. It was Ballek’s eighth tally of the season and 20th of his career.
The Mountaineers remained scoreless through the first half with Gamecock goalkeeper Filip Versterre recording two saves and finished the night with five. West Virginia attempted ten shots in the first half, with four on goal to contrast South Carolina’s three shots.
The Mountaineers tied it in the second half off a penalty kick in the 46th minute. West Virginia took the lead in the 61st minute with an unassisted goal off a corner kick, where it would remain for the rest of the match.
On the night, WVU led in shots (17-9), shots on goal (9-4), and corner kicks (12-1).
