Three Gamecocks onto Next Round of Main Draw at ITA Sectionals
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The South Carolina men’s tennis team completed day two of the ITA East Sectional Championship, sending three Gamecocks to the next round of play in the main draw.
In the singles main draw, sophomore Paul Barbier Gazeu delivered an impressive comeback to advance to the quarterfinals. After dropping the opening set 0-6 to No. 3 seeded Penn’s Manfredi Graziani, Barbier Gazeu rallied to win two consecutive tiebreakers, 7-6(2), 7-6(4).
In consolation play, Sean Daryabeigi and Lucas da Silva each earned straight-set victories to move on. Daryabeigi dominated Princeton’s Evan Wen 6-3, 6-0, while da Silva posted a steady 6-4, 6-2 win over Liberty’s Rodrigo Santiago Arraez.
The Gamecocks also saw success in doubles. In the main draw, Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer edged third seeded North Carolina’s Logan Zapp and Roan Jones in a thrilling match, 7-6(5), 3-6, [13-11]. The two are slated to face the No. 1 seed tomorrow in the semifinals for a shot to punch their ticket to the NCAA Championship. In consolation play, da Silva and Barbier Gazeu cruised past Boston College’s Lukas Rais and Mai Gao 6-1, 6-2 to advance.
