South Carolina Faces LSU Tuesday in SEC Road Opener

Tip set for 7 p.m. (ET) on ESPNU ; Gamecocks seeking first SEC road win since the regular season finale at Mississippi State in 2024

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina (9-5, 0-1 SEC) hits the road for just the second time this season facing LSU (12-2, 0-1 SEC) on Tuesday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m. (ET) at Pete Maravich Assembly Center with Lowell Galindo (pxp) and Pat Bradley (analyst) on the call for the ESPNU broadcast.

The Gamecocks are looking to bounce back from an opening SEC loss to No. 11/10 Vanderbilt (14-0, 1-0 SEC) on Saturday at Colonial Life Arena. The Commodores hit 10 3s, had five players score in double-figures and shot 50.9% from the floor en route to an 83-71 victory. Junior forward Elijah Strong led Carolina with 17 points in just 20 minutes of action in his first career SEC Game. Myles Stute (14) and Mike Sharavjamts (13) also scored in double-figures for Carolina. Sharavjamts has scored 10 or more in 11 of the team’s 14 games this season. The Gamecocks, who remain in the top-10 nationally via KenPom in 2-point field goal percentage (61.8%) and free throw percentage (79.4%) thru 14 games, were just 7-of-28 (25.0%) from 3 in their league opener.

LSU fell, 66-63, on the road at Texas A&M (11-3, 1-0) in their SEC opener on Saturday. Mississippi State transfer forward Michael Nwoko led the Tigers with 20 points. Portland transfer guard Max Mackinnon hit four 3s and had 20 points, five rebounds and five assists. Nwoko is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 16.4 points per contest while shooting an efficient 71.1% (91-of-128) from the floor. UNLV transfer guard Dedan Thomas Jr. averages 16.2 points per game and 7.1 assists per game, which leads the SEC and ranks No. 8 nationally. Thomas missed the Tigers SEC opener in College Station. Mackinnon is the LSU’s leading 3-point shooter at 44.0% (33-of-75). Marquel Sutton, a transfer forward from Omaha, averages 13.4 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest, which is second in the SEC and 27th nationally.

497 – Stute (143), Johnson (130), transfers Mike Sharavjamts (113) and Kobe Knox (111) have combined to play 497 games at the NCAA Division I level bringing a wealth of experience to the Gamecocks’ backcourt. Stute (6th) and Johnson (T-23rd) both rank inside the top-25 on the active games played list in Division I.
1,000 – Stute scored his 1,000th career point with a 3-pointer early in the game vs. Radford (Nov. 18).
48 – Johnson scored his 1,000th career point at South Carolina with his final bucket in a recent victory over The Citadel (Dec. 13). He became the 48th  Gamecock to join the 1,000-career point club (first since former All-SEC guard AJ Lawson from 2018-21).
25 – Johnson became the 25th different player for South Carolina since the 2004-05 season to record a 30-point game when he had a career-high 33 points vs. Southern Miss on Nov. 9. Johnson, Brenton Williams (2014) and Devan Downey (2009) are the only Gamecocks to have a 30-point game with seven or more made 3s.
44 – Johnson became the 44th player in the SEC to hit seven or more 3s in a game over the last five seasons. Stute is also on that list, making seven 3s twice while at Vanderbilt in games at Temple (11/15/22) and at Texas A&M (1/28/23).
121 – Carolina has hit 121 3s (8.6 3FG per game) in the first 14 games of the season with a combined 72 different players hitting a shot from behind the arc in the 14 ball games (average of 5.1 different players hitting a 3FG per game).

1997 – The Gamecocks picked up the program’s first top-five road win since 1997 on Jan. 30, 2024 with a 63-59 victory over No. 5/5 Tennessee. The previous top-five road win was a 72-66 win at No. 3 Kentucky on March 2, 1997. The 59 points scored by Tennessee were a season-low for the Vols. It was also the first home loss of the season for UT, snapping a 13-game home winning streak by the Vols at Thompson-Boling Arena.
