Gazeu Named SEC Freshman of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina men’s tennis redshirt freshman Paul Barbier Gazeu was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league announced Tuesday, after a dominant opening stretch of the dual match season. This award marks his first weekly award in his collegiate career and first for the team of the season.

No. 55 Gazeu posted a perfect 3-0 record in singles play to help lead the Gamecocks to three team victories, highlighted by a statement upset win over No. 10 Columbia. All three of his singles victories came in straight sets from the No. 2 or 3 positions.

The Montpellier, France native also played a key role in doubles action, helping set the tone against the Lions by capturing the opening doubles match in dominant fashion alongside teammate Lucas da Silva, 6-1.

The Gamecocks continue their season tomorrow, playing Clemson in the opening match of the ITA Kickoff Weekend at 11:00 am. The following day they will either play Michigan State or Harvard at 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m.
