Men's Tennis Sweeps Doubleheader

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 14 South Carolina men’s tennis team swept its doubleheader against Presbyterian and SC State on Friday, winning each match 4-0.

Presbyterian

The Gamecocks struck first in doubles play as Charlie Swaine and Gabe Avram made quick work of their opponents with a dominant 6-1 victory, marking the duo’s first win together in dual-match action. No. 34 Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer fell 6-2 on court one to Presbyterian’s David Mamalat and Matija Samardzic, evening out the match. From the No. 2 position, Atakan Karahan and Cole Henceroth built an early 3-1 lead and, after trading games down the stretch, held off a late push from the Blue Hose to secure a 6-4 win and clinch the doubles point, giving South Carolina a 1-0 advantage.

Momentum carried into singles as Daryabeigi and Karahan each opened with commanding 6-0 first-set wins at the top of the lineup. The Gamecocks captured the opening set on all six courts, highlighted by Stenzer’s comeback from a 4-3 deficit to force and win a 7-6 tiebreak. Avram broke a 3-3 deadlock on court five, winning three straight games to take the set 6-3. Daryabeigi and Karahan delivered back-to-back singles victories to put South Carolina on the brink, with Daryabeigi sweeping in straight sets. Henceroth sealed the sweep from the bottom of the lineup, earning a 6-1, 6-3 win.

South Carolina State

South Carolina opened the day’s second match with another strong showing in doubles, led by No. 51 Paul Barbier Gazeu and Lucas da Silva, who cruised to a 6-1 win. Henceroth and Karahan followed with a 6-3 victory to clinch the doubles point for the Gamecocks for the second time on the day. Daryabeigi and Charlie Swaine made their debut as a pairing and held a 4-3 lead on court three before the point was secured.

Gazeu and da Silva continued to set the tone in singles, each racing to 6-1 first-set wins from the top two spots in the lineup. Karahan and Stenzer matched the pace with 6-1 opening sets of their own, while Avram claimed a 6-3 first set on court five. Swaine rounded out a perfect first-set sweep by rallying from a 6-5 deficit to take his set 7-5.

Gazeu earned the first singles point of the match with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 victory, followed closely by da Silva, who posted an identical score to move the Gamecocks within one of clinching. Stenzer closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-4 win, completing South Carolina’s second sweep of the day for the Garnet & Black.

The Gamecocks return home on Sunday, Feb. 8 hosting No. 20 Duke at 1:00 p.m.
