Okot Earns USBWA and SEC Player of the Week

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina women’s basketball senior Madina Okot earned conference and national recognition today for her efforts in a pair of wins last week that propelled the Gamecocks to their 10th SEC regular-season championship. Okot was named SEC co-Player of the Week by the league office and was among the USBWA’s National Players of the Week. It was the second time she claimed both honors this season

Okot averaged 16.5 points and 13.0 rebounds for the week. With double-doubles against both #25/24 Alabama and #17/17 Ole Miss, she moved into third in the nation with 18 on the season and leads the nation with six against ranked opponents. Of her 33 points on the week, 15 came from the 3-point line, from which she was a perfect 5-for-5 on the week. Her three made 3s against Ole Miss on Sunday were the most by a 6-foot-6 or taller SEC player this century. Six of Okot’s 10 rebounds against the Rebels were on the offensive end. At Alabama, she had her fourth-straight double-double by halftime with 13 points and 10 boards along with four blocks in 16 of the game’s first 20 minutes. She finished the game with 16 points and 16 rebounds.

For the season, Okot is among the nation’s top 20 in double-doubles, rebounds per game (10.6, 14th) and field goal percentage (.586 17th). She is also 23rd in the country in offensive rebounds per game at 3.7, and her 1.7 blocks per game are fifth-best in the SEC. Her 18 double-doubles are the 10th-most in a single season in program history.

The other USBWA selections were Hailey Adams (Rice), Ava Heiden (Iowa), Hannah Hidalgo (Notre Dame) and Olivia Miles (TCU).

No. 3/3 South Carolina opens the last week of the regular season on Thu., Feb. 26, at Colonial Life Arena with an 8 p.m. tipoff against Missouri. The Gamecocks will honor their four seniors prior to the game at approximately 7:40 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food donations for the SEC Food Fight, which will be collected outside the area. There will also be a Teddy Bear Toss at halftime, with all stuffed animals (unboxed, no battery packs) donated to local charities.
