Men’s Tennis Hosts No. 18 Texas A&M Sunday

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The No. 13 South Carolina men’s tennis team (10-2, 3-1 SEC) continues conference play at home this week, facing No. 18 Texas A&M at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8.

The match is slated to take place at the Carolina Outdoor Tennis Center, weather permitting. Fans can park in the Athletics Village Garage for $10 per car or pit parking will be available first come first serve.

GAMECOCK NOTABLES

  • Last time out, South Carolina split home and away matches against then-No. 4 Texas and then-No. 16 Florida. The Gamecocks fell 4-2 to the Longhorns at home in their first loss of the conference slate but managed to bounce back and defeat the Gators 5-2 on the road.
  • South Carolina earned the doubles point in each match last week, with duo Lucas da Silva and Paul Barbier Gazeu earning a 6-4 upset win over the Longhorns, and another ranked 6-2 win over the Gators. Sean Daryabeigi and Max Stenzer’s 7-5 win against Texas clinched the doubles point, while the pair of Atakan Karahan and Charlie Swaine competed together for the first time this dual match season to clinch the point against Florida with a 6-4 victory from the third position.
  • The Gamecocks’ other point in the loss to the Longhorns came from court one, where da Silva defeated then-No. 3 Sebastian Gorzny. Da Silva came back after dropping the first set to take the second and third 6-2, 6-3. It was the second time this season that da Silva has beaten the third-ranked singles player.
  • South Carolina saw singles victories from Gazeu (6-4, 6-4), da Silva (6-3, 6-4), Karahan (7-6, 6-4) and Daryabeigi (3-6, 6-2, 6-4) against Florida.
  • Gazeu and da Silva remain undefeated in doubles play this dual match season at 8-0 earning four wins over ranked opponents.
  • Da Silva is 8-2 in singles from the top of the lineup, and Gazeu is 7-3 so far this dual match season.

WEEKLY AWARD WATCH

  • South Carolina has earned five SEC weekly awards so far this season from three different Gamecocks.
  • Da Silva was named Player of the Week twice, on Feb. 11 and Feb. 25.
  • Gazeu picked up two Freshman of the Week honors on Jan. 21 and Feb. 11.
  • Swaine shared a Freshman of the Week honor with Georgia’s Noah Johnson on Feb. 25.
  • The Gamecocks have swept the weekly awards twice this season.

IN THE RANKINGS

  • da Silva soared through the rankings in the latest ITA singles release, now sitting at No. 16 after coming in at 44 last week. The mark is the highest ITA ranking the senior has achieved in his collegiate career. Daryabeigi jumped to No. 40, and Gazeu rounds out the Gamecocks singles rankings at No. 100.
  • In the doubles rankings, Gazeu and da Silva moved from No. 28 to No. 10 which marks the highest ranking this season from any Gamecock in singles or doubles. It is also the highest ranking for two as a pair.
  • Daryabeigi and Stenzer jumped about 60 places to come in at No. 24, and da Silva partnered with Dayarbier close out the Gamecocks’ rankings at No. 55.
  • South Carolina made another significant leap in the team rankings as well, moving up to No. 13 after coming in at No. 22 last week.

SCOUTING THE AGGIES

No. 18 Texas A&M is 9-5 this season, opening their campaign with a six-match win streak. The Aggies are currently 2-2 in conference play, with wins over Ole Miss and Kentucky. Coming off losses against then-No. 11 Vanderbilt and then-No. 8 Georgia, the Aggies will travel to take on No. 24 Florida on Friday, March 6 before facing the Gamecocks. Khololwam Montsi (No.49), Theo Papamalamis (No.64), and Alexander Frusina (No.86) make up the Aggies singles ITA rankings. Papamalamis and Togan Tokac are No. 29 in the doubles rankings, and Montsi and Frusina round out the Aggies at No. 48.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The Aggies lead the Gamecocks 16-7 in the all-time series. Last season, then-No. 26 South Carolina upset then-No. 12 Texas A&M 4-2 in a three-hour match, snapping their three-match losing streak against the Aggies.
