Chris Mazoue, MD
Christopher G. Mazoué, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, arthroscopic surgery and the treatment of complex shoulder, elbow and knee injuries at Prisma Health Orthopedics. He serves as department chair and is a clinical professor of orthopedic surgery with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine.
Dr. Mazoué attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where he received a bachelor’s degree in economics and won an Ivy League championship in football. He received his medical degree from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, where he was elected into the Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) Honors Medical Society. He then completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Following residency, he completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, under the guidance of renowned orthopedic surgeons James Andrews, MD, and William Clancy, MD.
With extensive experience caring for athletes at all levels, Mazoué has treated patients from youth to professional leagues. He provides care for numerous local middle schools, high schools and colleges. He has served as team physician for South Carolina State University, where he was elected into the South Carolina State Athletic Hall of Fame for his service to the university. He has been a team physician for the University of South Carolina Gamecocks for over fifteen years and is a consultant for Coastal Carolina University. He also serves as chairman of the South Carolina Medical Association Medical Aspects of Sports Medicine Committee.
Mazoué’s clinical expertise includes complex shoulder and elbow surgery, shoulder reconstruction, shoulder replacement and complex knee injuries. This includes arthroscopic shoulder stabilization, arthroscopic rotator cuff repair and superior capsular reconstruction, total/reverse shoulder replacements, arthroscopic elbow surgery, elbow reconstruction and repair including “Tommy John” surgery, arthroscopic knee surgery to include meniscus debridement and/or repair, ligament reconstruction including ACL repair/reconstruction and repair/reconstruction of multi-ligamentous knee injuries, knee cartilage repair/replacement techniques and knee osteotomies for malalignment.
Mazoué is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), the Southern Orthopaedic Association (SOA) and the South Carolina Orthopaedic Association (SCOA). Mazoué was elected to the American Orthopedic Association, the oldest orthopedic association in the United States, in June 2018. He has numerous publications and gives lectures locally, regionally and nationally.
