“Well it’s just one of those situations that its looking a lot better. I’m sure that he feels a little bit better about himself. He’s got some quality bats and you get a green line on a 3-0 and you hit a homerun, you have to feel pretty good. He’s fought hard to get back into the situation and the thing I’m most encouraged about is he’s having competitive bats.”
On playing past assistant coaches (Monte Lee head coach of College of Charleston)
“I don’t like playing my guys. You don’t feel as good as you’d like to when you win. I have great respect for Coach Toman, Coach Lee, Coach Lake and Coach Meyers, all those guys. It’s neat to stay in touch with them and share information. But it’s a little bit hard for me to play each other. I don’t enjoy it that much.”
“Coach Lee has one of the better teams we’ve played. They’re dangerous. We’re very fortunate to be able to win tonight. I thought Colby (Holmes) wiggled out of a couple situations that could’ve gotten ugly for us. He made a couple good breaking pitches when he needed to. But they had seven lefties in that line up and some good hitters. If I’m not mistaken, Coach Lee was maybe 6th in the country in scoring runs. When I saw the line up with those seven lefties in there, I knew it was going to be tough for Colby. But he battled through it and did a nice job and we got some runs too. “
On making lineup decisions
“I look over there and I see Brady Thomas and Jeffery Jones and they make some lineup changes. They’ve got right-handers in there and I’ve got two pretty good left-handed hitters sitting on the bench. But I couldn’t take Parker out because our bullpen was a little bit thin. Tyler Webb was sick, Ethan Carter didn’t feel great either and Matt Price threw too many pitches on Sunday to get out there. So our bullpen was a little bit thinner then it has been. I couldn’t make a move on Parker, I had to leave him in the game.”
On this weekend’s series vs. Vanderbilt
“I don’t look ahead. I always try to prepare. I probably spent more time on Coach Lee’s team today than I have in a long time against a non-conference opponent. Just based on their match ups and personnel, I spent a lot of time analyzing and trying to be prepared to make decisions with our pitching based on their offense. With that being said I follow the SEC all the time. I’m a baseball coach my hobby is following baseball. I know Vanderbilt’s really good. Their ERA is over 3, they’ve got power arms and they’re scoring a bunch of runs. I think they’re hitting around .340. It’s going to be a tremendous challenge. An SEC game on the road will be very hard for us.”
