COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina women’s tennis junior Ana Marija Zubori has been named SEC Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Zubori posted an undefeated record playing No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles against Ohio State and VCU last weekend in Durham, N.C., at the ITA Kick-Off Weekend.
Zubori clinched the No. 32 Gamecocks’ 4-3 victory against No. 35 VCU on Sunday when the match was tied at 3-all. She lost the first set against Kateryna Yergina 6-3 but came back to win the second and third sets each by scores of 6-3.
The win against Yergina allowed Zubori to stay undefeated on the spring at 6-0 and improved her overall record to 14-2. She is currently ranked No. 14 in the country in singles, the second highest ranking in school history.
Tuesday’s announcement marked the first time in Zubori’s career she has earned SEC Player of the Week. She is a two-time All-SEC selection.
Zubori and the Gamecocks return to action Wednesday, Feb. 11, when they host Winthrop at 5 p.m. at the USC Field House.
