Columbia, S.C. – The University of South Carolina baseball program has announced the hiring of Monte Lee as assistant baseball coach. Lee will coach hitters, outfielders and baserunning at Carolina as well as coach first base.

“I’m extremely excited to bring Coach Lee’s expertise and enthusiasm into our program,” said head coach Ray Tanner. “He will be an asset to our team.”

A graduate of the College of Charleston, Lee served the previous two seasons as hitting and outfield instructor at Spartanburg Methodist Junior College. The 2001 Spartanburg Methodist club reached the NJCAA College World Series and the 2002 team set a school record with 51 wins in a season. This past summer Lee was head coach of the South Carolina Diamond Devils, an AAU travel team.

Lee was a four-year starter and letterman at the College of Charleston. He holds the school’s career records for total bases and RBI. As a senior with the Cougars, Lee hit three home runs in the opening game between South Carolina and College of Charleston in a 5-4 Carolina win on February 6, 1999. Lee was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals and played two years of professional baseball.
