BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A sum of 82 University of South Carolina freshmen student-athletes were named to the 2009 Southeastern Conference Freshman Academic Honor Roll on Thursday by SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, the most by any league institution. In total, the Gamecocks placed 283 student-athletes on the league’s honor rolls, the most by any school in the 2008-09 academic year.

A total of 564 freshmen student-athletes from the 12 schools in the SEC made the listing, pushing the league’s total from its four honor rolls in 2008-09 to 2,352 student-athletes.

Behind South Carolina on the freshman honor roll was the University of Florida (69), the University of Alabama (58) and the University of Georgia (57).

Each student-athlete must 1) have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution; 2) be on scholarship or a letter winner; 3) have completed 24 semester hours of non-remedial credit at the nominating institution; and 4) have been a member of the varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.

The 2009 SEC Freshmen Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2008-09 academic calendar.
