Columbia, S.C. –
A pair of future Gamecocks were honored by Collegiate Baseball this past week and named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger High School All-America team. Right-handed pitcher Ethan Carter (Newport News, Va./Menchville HS) and catcher Brison Celek (Charleston, S.C./Bishop England HS) both earned accolades from the publication for their production in their high school season. Both players also led their respective high schools to state championships.
Carter, who was rated the No. 1 best high school player in the state of Virginia by PG Crosschecker, helped lead Menchville HS not only to a AAA state championship in Virginia but an overall No. 1 ranking in the nation by both Collegiate Baseball and the USA Today. Carter pitched the state title game and earned a win in the 7-1 victory over Hanover HS. Last summer, Carter was one of 38 players in the nation to attend and play in the 2008 AFLAC All-American HS Classic.
Celek is a three-time South Carolina AA All-State selection (2007-08-09) and most recently was named the MVP of the 2009 South Carolina/North Carolina Select All-Star game played last weekend in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Celek has been part of several top teams as he led Bishop England HS to AA state championships this year and in 2007. Celek hit .400 this year with 42 runs scored, eight doubles as well as 11 HR and 48 RBI. He was also a member of the 2008 17-U Diamond Devils summer team that won the 17-U World Wood Bat Association National Championship and the Continental Amateur Baseball Association 18-U Wood Bat World Series.
