DOVER, Del. – The South Carolina equestrian team bounced back from its first loss of the spring season to defeat Delaware State, 12-6, Saturday at the Gamblers Choice Equestrian Center in Dover. The Gamecocks scored MVP rides from Alex Haskell, Kristen Terebesi and Amy Biffle.
The win improves USC to 6-4 overall on the season. The Hunter Seat team took a 7-3 victory to improve to 7-3 overall on the season. The Western team took a 5-3 victory and evens its record at 5-5 on the season.
“As a whole, we rode OK,” head coach Boo Duncan said. “We started out a little tentative. We jumped first and everyone was not as aggressive as they normally are. It showed in our rounds, but once we got into the flat it went well.”
Carolina took a 3-2 showing in equitation over fences, gaining wins from Alex Foster, Terebesi and Nicole Bourgeois. Terebesi took MVP honors in the event, giving her five in equitation over fences on the season and improving her record in the event to 8-2. Terebesi has earned MVP honors in eight of 19 rides this season in equitation on the flat and over fences. Foster took a close 81-80 victory in her first ride of the season. Bourgeois won for the second consecutive weekend, taking a 74-72 victory.
Equitation on the flat took a 4-1 decision with wins from Terebesi, Haskell, Victoria Middleton and Sarah Stephens. Haskell took MVP honors for the first time in her career in a 77-68 victory. She is undefeated in her last five rides and moves to 4-2-2 on the season. Terebesi also scored 77 points in her win while Stephens recorded the biggest margin of victory in a 66-42 decision.
The Western team was led by a 3-1 showing in horsemanship where Amy Biffle took MVP honors for the first time in her career. Biffle rode to a 71.5 tie while sister Katy Biffle took a 70.5-68 victory. Rachel Stas improved to 2-0 on the season with a 70.5-67 win while Michelle Grah rounded out the Carolina victories in the event.
The Gamecocks and Hornets tied in reining, 2-2, with Chloe Gray and Allison Bradley recording wins for Carolina. Gray improves to 6-3-1 in her first season for the Gamecocks. Bradley took a 61.5-0 win on a disqualification to tie with Gray for the most wins in reining so far this season.
“The Western team rode pretty well,” Duncan said. “The horses weren’t easy and we dealt with them pretty well. It’s always good to get a road win.”
South Carolina concludes the regular season Sunday when they travel to Sacred Heart for a 9 a.m. competition. Carolina will then have four weeks off before hosting the Southern Equestrian Championships at One Wood Farm from March 28-29.
