CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — The Gamecock women’s tennis team gave a strong second-day performance at the UVa Invitational in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday. South Carolina claimed five of six singles matches and won two of three doubles contests against Virginia on the day.
Junior Gira Schofield won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 against Lindsey Pereira to bounce back from a three-set loss she suffered yesterday. Classmate Natasa Vuckovic rebounded from a loss yesterday as well by cruising past Jenny Stevens 6-1, 6-3, as did junior Suzanna Mansour by a 6-3, 7-6 (0) score against Maggy Yahner.
Improving to 2-0 in singles play this year were freshman Miljana Jocic and senior Megan McGavock. Jocic was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Lara Alexander, and McGavock downed Hampton Williams 6-0, 6-0.
Gamecock sophomore Ana Marija Zubori lost in three sets to Amanda Rales 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. It was just the seventh loss of her career.
In doubles, Schofield and Zubori teamed up for an 8-4 triumph versus Rales and Stevens. Jocic and McGavock also won 8-3 over Alexander and Williams. Mansour and Vuckovic lost a close battle with Pereira and Yahner 9-7.
Play in the UVa Invitational concludes Sunday.
