AUBURN, Ala. — Gira Schofield and Megan McGavock of the South Carolina women’s tennis team reached the singles finals of flights 1 and 4 at the SEC Fall Coaches Classic on Saturday in Auburn, Ala.
In flight 1, Schofield knocked off Tiffany Welcher of Alabama in the quarterfinals 6-1, 6-3 and then beat No. 20-ranked Amanda Taylor from Vanderbilt 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Schofield will face Catherine Newman, also of Vanderbilt, for the championship Sunday.
McGavock defeated Dunja Djuranovic from Auburn in three sets 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the final against Carolina Escamilla of Kentucky on Sunday.
Suzanna Mansour and Miljana Jocic each won their quarterfinal contests in flight 3 before falling in the semis. Mansour was a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 winner versus Soledad Podlipnik of Ole Miss and lost 6-1, 6-1 to Cameron Ellis from Georgia. Jocic upended Georgia’s Adrienne Elsberry 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 and then fell in three sets to Tennessee’s Samantha Orlin 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
Earlier in the day in doubles action, Mansour and McGavock fell in the championship of flight B 8-6 to Ellis/Elsberry from Georgia. In a consolation match in flight A, Schofield and Ana Marija Zubori knocked off No. 6-rated Haney/Koning of Auburn 9-8. Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic also won their consolation match 8-2 against Makarycheva/Saddler of Mississippi State.
Zubori and Vuckovic also won their consolation singles matches. Zubori defeated Megan Broderick from Kentucky 6-3, 6-1, while Vuckovic won 6-1, 6-3 over LSU’s Nicole Kantor.
