Columbia, S.C. – Head Coach Joyce Compton records her 1,000th career victory as the University of South Carolina softball (25-10) team spilt the series with the Winthrop Eagles (30-11) with a 2-0 victory in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Beckham Field. The win also snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Gamecocks.
Compton becomes just the sixth Division I coach, ninth in NCAA history, to achieve the 1,000-win milestone.
“I see this I as just another win for the season. Right now we are focused on win 1,001. If I focused on this win, then we are in for a long season,” Compton said. “They pitched well, luckily we found a way to do something in the second game today to get the win.”
South Carolina got on the board in the second game when Ashton Payne scored on an RBI-single off the bat of Lindsay Walker. The run snapped a 26-inning scoreless streak.
The Gamecocks extended its lead by one in the fourth when Jessica Josker scored on a one-out double by McKenna Hughes. Winthrop pitcher Izzy Trottier retired the next two Gamecocks to end the inning.
South Carolina pitcher Kate Pouliot held Winthrop batters to just three hits while striking out two, improving her record to 13-3, while Trottier suffered the loss, taking her to 8-4. Josker and Payne both went 2-for-3 at the plate and each scored a run.
The Gamecocks travel to Starkville, Miss. to face Mississippi State this weekend as they resume SEC play.
