North Carolina State Team Notes
N.C. State’s win splits the season series with Penn State after dropping a 5-3 regular season game on Feb. 10. The Wolfpack improve to 2-1 in the all-time series.
Abbie Sims threw a no-hitter through 5.1 innings before giving up a single in the top of the sixth inning. Sims, who was five outs from recording her fifth no-hitter of the season, last held an opponent to one hit in a 7-1 win over UNC-Greensboro on April 12.
Jen Chamberlin’s two-out single in the seventh inning extended her hitting streak to 10 games.
Coach Lisa Navas collected her 500th career victory with the win.
N.C. State advances to play South Carolina in an elimination game at 7 p.m. The Wolfpack lost a 5-3 decision to the Gamecocks in the first game of the Regional. N.C. State will be the visitors in the elimination game.
Penn State Team Notes
In eight trips to the NCAA Tournament, Saturday’s elimination marks only the second time the Nittany Lions failed to register a victory in Regional play. Penn State also went 0-2 in 1985, their first trip to the NCAA Tournament.
Penn State was held to one hit for the third time this season. The Nittany Lions were also held to one hit in a 12-0 loss to Nevada on Feb. 25 and in a 2-0 loss to then-No. 7 Northwestern on April 15.
Jen Acunto recorded Penn State’s only hit of the game with a single to right field with one out in the sixth inning.
The Nittany Lions stranded five base runners despite collecting only one hit. Penn State stranded two runners in the third inning after collecting a walk, fielder’s choice and another walk. They then loaded the bases in the sixth with Acunto’s single, a fielding error and a hit batter after also
