Dec. 15, 2006

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina softball head coach Joyce Compton recently announced the signing of Jill Semento (Umatilla, Fla.) and Cassie Gogreve (South Pasadena, Calif.) for the 2006 fall signing period.

“Even with only two athletes in our 2007 class, I feel that we have brought in two impact players for the Gamecocks,” said Compton. “Jill is a very versatile player with experience at all infield positions. She is bringing with her a great knowledge of the game, great offensive and defensive skills and great work ethic. Cassie is coming to the Gamecocks with a wealth of experience at the catching position. She is a strong defensive catcher that handles pitchers very well. She will also add a solid bat to our lineup.”

A utility player, Semento plays for her father, Don, at Umatilla H.S. where she hit .650, an area best, with four home runs and 43 RBI as a junior. She is also a member of the Florida Ultimate Gold travel ball team, coached by Tom Stager. She plays shortstop at Umatilla but has played third, second and catcher, for her travel ball team. Semento chose South Carolina over Jacksonville and Georgia Tech.

Gogreve is a catcher/utility player that finished her junior season with a .400 batting average and led her league in the regular season in on base percentage, slugging percentage and RBI. Named first team All-Rio Hondo League, Gogreve also plays travel ball for the 2006 ASA 18 Gold National Champion OC Batbusters. She previously played for the OC Lionettes and the California Rage Gold. Upon graduation, she will become a four-year letterwinner under her high school coach, Mike Williams. Gogreve is also a three-year letterwinner in water polo and was named Honorable Mention All-league as a sophomore.
