PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. — Gira Schofield from the South Carolina women’s tennis team fell in the second round of qualifying Tuesday at the Riviera/ITA Women’s All-American Tennis Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Schofield began the day with a 6-4, 6-1 victory against 67th-ranked Ashley Joelson from UCLA. Jessica Nguyen, who is ranked No. 52 and plays for Stanford, dismissed Schofield by scores of 7-6(4), 6-4. Schofield is ranked No. 39 in the country this fall.
In doubles, the 17th-ranked duo of Dianne Matias and Lindsey Nelson of Southern California registered an 8-0 victory in the first round over Schofield and Natasa Vuckovic, who are ranked 37th. The USC duo will continue play in the consolation bracket beginning Wednesday morning.
