BOSTON – The 24th-ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team fell on the road to 13th-ranked Harvard, 4-3. The Gamecocks move to 6-2 on the season and 2-1 all-time against the Crimson (6-3).
Senior Danielle Wiggins earned South Carolina’s first point with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Laura Peterzan at third singles, while freshman Gira Schofield, ranked 46th, defeated Eva Wang, 1-6, 6-1, 7-5, in the first spot and sophomore Megan McGavock earned a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win over Preethi Mukundan at No. 5 singles. Freshman Natasa Vuckovic and junior Laura Ganzer both lost to ranked opponents at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Vuckovic fell to No. 66 Elsa O’Riain, 6-4, 6-3, while Ganzer dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision to 72nd-ranked Melissa Anderson. Rounding out singles play for the Gamecocks was Miranda Gutierrez, who lost to Stephanie Schnitter, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5, in the sixth slot.
South Carolina claimed one of the three doubles matches as Harvard took the 1-0 lead heading into singles play. At third singles, Wiggins and junior Christyn Lucas won the only doubles match for the Gamecocks, defeating Mukundan and Peterzan, 8-5. Schofield and Vuckovic nearly upset the fourth-ranked doubles team of O’Riain and Anderson, but lost the tiebreaker and fell, 9-8(5), in the first position. At No. 2 doubles, Ganzer and McGavock lost to Wang and Schnitter, 8-5.
Next up for the Gamecocks are their first SEC matches of the season as they play at No. 75 Mississippi State on March 3 and at No. 35 Ole Miss on March 5.
