COLUMBIA, S.C. – The 22nd-ranked University of South Carolina women’s tennis team defeated Davidson, 7-0, Sunday at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. The Gamecocks improved to 2-0 on the spring season and are now 5-0 all-time against the Wildcats, who dropped to 1-2 overall.
The Gamecocks opened the afternoon by sweeping all three doubles matches. Playing at No. 1 doubles, freshman Gira Schofield and sophomore Megan McGavock pulled away from Kelsey Linville and Kim Whelan to win the match, 8-5. Senior Danielle Wiggins and junior Miranda Guiterrez took the No. 2 doubles match over Lindsey Powel and Michele Fanney, 8-4, while senior Justine Walsh and redshirt sophomore Grace Blakely defeated Kate Levitt and Meredith Skeeters, 8-2, in the third position.
Heading into singles with a 1-0 lead, South Carolina completed the sweep by winning all six matches. Schofield, ranked 59th in the nation, defeated Linville in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1, while Wiggins and McGavock won their matches over Fanney, 6-2, 6-0, and Whelan, 6-0, 6-2, respectively. In the final two matches of the day, Blakely defeated Skeeters, 6-3, 6-3, while Walsh won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, over Emily Wilkinson.
“This was a good win for us,” head coach Arlo Elkins said. “We’re looking forward to Furman who gave us a good match last year.”
The Gamecocks return to action Tuesday, Jan. 31, when they host in-state foe, No. 60 Furman, at 5 p.m. at the USC Indoor Tennis Facility. South Carolina then hits the road for the first time this season when they travel to College Park, Md. for matches against No. 39 Maryland Feb. 3 and No. 35 Michigan Feb. 4.
