The South Carolina men’s golf team is keeping it competitive this fall with the Garnet vs. Black Intrasquad series. USC’s 10 golfers are divided into two teams and are playing four rounds of golf head-to-head for pride, bragging rights and freshly washed cars. The Garnet team, comprised of freshmen Allen Koon, Baker Elmore and Mark Silvers, redshirt freshman Patrick Cunning and redshirt sophomore David Kite, won the first round, which was played at the par-72 Columbia Country Club on Tuesday, Sept. 27.

The Garnet team topped the Black team by six strokes, 368 to 362. All five scores are counted toward the team total.

Koon paced the Garnet squad with a 68, the best round of the day. Cunning shot a 71, Elmore fired a 72 and Silvers posted a 74. Kite rounded out the Garnet effort with a 77.

For the Black team, freshman Florian Fritsch set the bar with a first-round 69. Senior Eirik Johansen shot 72 and sophomore Mark Anderson carded a 75. Junior Robert Svensson and sophomore Warren Thomas both finished with a 76.

Three rounds remain to be played in the Garnet vs. Black Intrasquad. Action continues Thursday, Sept. 29, with a 2 p.m. tee time at Spring Valley. The third round is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8 a.m. at The University Club. The intrasquad challenge wraps up on Sunday, Oct. 2, with a 2 p.m. start at Woodcreek.
