Marion, S.C. – The University of South Carolina womens tennis team improved to 13-6 on the season and recorded their fourth straight win on the season with a 7-0 victory against Francis Marion on Tuesday in Marion, S.C.. The Gamecocks have now won five of their last seven and six of their last nine.
USC entered today’s match with a ranking of 23rd in the country. Today’s match started with singles. The Gamecocks swept singles and took a 6-0 lead into the doubles matches.
Senior Magda Wojdylo put the Gamecocks up 1-0 with her 6-1,6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. The senior from Krakow, Poland has now won seven of her last 10. Justine Walsh improved to 7-1 in the spring with her 6-0,6-1 win at four over Maria Covell. Megan McGavock stayed perfect in dual matches and increased the USC lead to 3-0 with a 6-2,6-2 victory at three. Christyn Lucas clinched the third straight Gamecock victory and earned her fourth straight win with a 6-0,6-1 triumph at the top singles position. Lucas has now won six of her last eight matches. Grace Blakely added to the USC total with a 6-1,6-0 victory against Sara Moyer at five. It was the third start in a singles match this season for Blakely in a duals match. Audrey George moved to 6-0 on the season with her 6-1,6-1 victory at six over Sarah Carmichael. George’s win gave the Gamecocks a clean sweep in singles.
In doubles, the Gamecocks swept taking two of the three matches by scores of 8-0 and the other by a tally of 8-1. Lucas and Wojdylo took the top doubles position 8-0 as Blakely and McGavock took the No. 2 doubles spot 8-0. George and Walsh finished the Carolina sweep in doubles by taking an 8-1 victory at three.
The Gamecocks will return to action on Sunday when they host No. 7 Florida. After taking on the Gators, USC will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to play in the 2005 SEC Womens Tennis Tournament.
