Detroit, Michigan – Former University of South Carolina infielder Brian Roberts helped lead the American League All-Star team to a 7-5 victory over the National League on Tuesday evening at the 2005 Major League All-Star Game. Roberts went 1-for-2 with a double and run scored and also help turn two double plays with Baltimore Orioles’ teammate and All-Star MVP Miguel Tejada.

“I am very excited and proud of Brian,” said South Carolina head baseball coach Ray Tanner. “I think I was a lot more nervous than he was just watching the game. He’s having a great year and certainly deserves to be the All-Star second baseman.”

Roberts, an All-American on the 1999 Gamecock Baseball Team that won the SEC East, currently leads the American League in hitting with a .345 batting average in addition to 15 HR and 49 RBI. This was his first appearance in the All-Star Game and the first by a former Gamecock player since Dave Hollins back in 1993 with the Philadelphia Phillies.

Roberts and the Orioles are currently in second place in the American League East with a 47-40 record, two games behind the Boston Red Sox. Baltimore begins the second half of the MLB season at Seattle on July 14 at 10:05 p.m. ET.
