Columbia, S.C. – Eighteen pitchers saw action Wednesday night, nine by each team, as South Carolina banged out 14 hits in a 10-1 non-conference baseball win over Davidson before 2,508 fans at Sarge Frye Field.
Chris Brown and Jon Willard had three hits apiece with one of Brown’s a three run home run that was the highlight of a five run South Carolina second inning. Willard, Brendan Winn and Steven Tolleson had doubles for the Gamecocks and Michael Campbell contributed two hits. Phil Disher and Tolleson each had two runs batted in.
Andy Lambert, the second of South Carolina’s nine, was the winning pitcher to improve his record to 2-0. Justin Hartanov, who started Davidson’s parade of nine pitchers, was charged with the loss. His record is 2-3. South Carolina’s record increased to 18-3 while Davidson dropped to 9-10.
After a scoreless first inning South Carolina batted around in the second, scoring five times on six hits. Campbell started it with a single and also made the final out of the inning. Winn doubled but the big blow of the inning was Brown’s third homer of the season with two teammates on base.
After Davidson scored a run in the top of the fourth South Carolina added one in the fifth and four more runs in the eighth inning.
Davidson had four hits, all singles, with two of them coming in the fourth when Gregory Zage and Eli Benefield singled and Taylor Shoop walked to load the bases with no outs. Zage scored when Alden Crissey hit into a double play. The South Carolina defense turned two double plays and played errorless ball for the ninth time this season to improve he team fielding percentage to .981.
The Gamecocks used three hits, two walks and a Davidson wild pitch to plate four runs in the eighth inning.
South Carolina travels to Gainesville for a three game Southeastern Conference series with the Florida Gators Friday through Sunday.
