KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Lady Vols took game one against the South Carolina Gamecocks Tuesday night as USC fell 1-0. Junior Kristin Hall was the only Gamecock player to record a multi-hit game as she went 2-for-3. Starter Stacey Johnson fell to 9-4 on the season while USC fell to 17-9 and 6-7 in the SEC.
Tennessee scored their lone run in the first inning as Sarah Fekete scored on a two-out RBI single by Lauren Mattox. Monica Abbott (29-4) earned the win for Tennessee as she held USC to four hits and struck out nine batters.
Hall recorded the Gamecocks first hit of the game when she drove a single through the second base side of the infield to lead-off the third inning. USC would get another hit in the inning as Nancy Crane also singled and advanced Hall to third, but the two would remain on base as Abbott struck out Margaret Person for the third out.
In the bottom of the fifth, Tennessee threatened to score again as they had the bases loaded with one out. The threat ended when Samantha Jennings caught a sharp line drive from Mattox and tagged third base to put out Mandy Fishback in a double play and got the Gamecocks out of the inning.
In the seventh inning, the Gamecocks’ Cornett hit a two-out single in an attempt to keep the inning alive but Hall then followed with a pop-up to end the inning and the game.
