Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina baseball (14-0) continues its homestand this weekend with a three-game series vs. Delaware State (8-8) beginning on Friday night at 7 p.m. at Sarge Frye Field. Saturday’s first pitch is set for 4 p.m. with the final game of the set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Ranked as high as third in the nation this week (Baseball America/NCBWA), the Gamecocks will start junior RHP Billy Buckner (3-0, 3.77 ERA) on Friday night. Buckner is this week’s Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week as decided by Collegiate Baseball. In his appearance last Saturday vs. Clemson, Buckner struck out 16 batters in seven 2/3 innings and allowed just three hits as the Gamecocks defeated the Tigers 5-2.
This is Delaware State’s third trip to Columbia in the past five seasons for a three-game series. South Carolina swept the Hornets in 2000 and 2001. South Carolina defeated Delaware State 12-2 on February 18, 2001 in the last game played between both schools. Live GAMETRACKER stats will be available at USCSPORTS.COM.
The Gamecocks’ 14-0 start is the best in school history since the 2000 season when Carolina won a record 22 consecutive games before losing. South Carolina will start junior RHP Aaron Rawl (3-0, 2.82 ERA) on Saturday afternoon and will finish the series with junior LHP Matt Campbell (3-0, 0.00 ERA) getting the ball.
