Columbia, S.C. – Junior left-hander Matt Campbell struck out 11 and allowed only one hit in six innings Tuesday night and third ranked South Carolina defeated Yale 6-1 in the first of a two game college baseball series to improve the Gamecock record to 13-0.
The second game is scheduled for 7 p.m., Wednesday at Sarge Frye Field. Campbell won his third decision of the season. He had not allowed a run in 20 2/3 innings and has 32 strikes and only two walks. He has allowed a total of nine hits.
Sophomore Alec Smith (0-1) pitched a complete game for Yale which dropped to 1-3. Smith allowed 13 hits, 12 singles and one double. He walked one and struck out two. The game was played in an hour and 56 minutes.
Brendan Winn had three hits for South Carolina. His double was the only extra base hit by the Gamecocks. Bryan Triplett, who stretched his hitting streak to 13 games, Steve Pearce, Landon Powell and Michael Campbell had two hits apiece. Powell has a nine game hitting streak.
For the first time in 13 games the Gamecocks failed to hit a home run. South Carolina has homered 29 times this season.
Cliff Donald pitched the final three innings for South Carolina to earn his first save. He allowed four hits, three of them doubles, and struck out three. Neither South Carolina pitcher walked a batter. Yale scored in the ninth inning to avoid a shutout. Justin Ankey doubled and scored on a base hit by Marc Sawyer.
Ankey had two of Yale’s five hits. He, Jake Doyle and Randy Leonard had doubles. The only hit allowed by Campbell was a fourth inning single by Ankey.
South Carolina took a 1-0 first inning lead on two infield hits, a stolen base and an infield out. The Gamecocks added three runs in the third inning on a walk, hit batter and four hits, leaving the bases loaded. Winn doubled in the fifth ahead of a single by Michael Campbell and Winn scored as Ryan Mahoney hit into a double play. Triplett singled in the eighth, stole second, and scored on a hit by Pearce.
The South Carolina pitching staff lowered its earned run average to 1.78 in 116 innings. Gamecock pitchers have allowed 66 hits and 16 walks while striking out 161. The Gamecock offense has a team batting average of .371.
