Fabian Breaks Single Season Walks Record, Gamecocks Drop Regular Season Finale

Carolina will fce Texas A&M in the opening round of the SEC Tournament on Tuesday, May 10

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The South Carolina softball team dropped its regular season finale Sunday afternoon (May 8) to 13th ranked Kentucky 13-5 in five innings.

Zoe Laneaux led the Gamecocks going 2-for-2 with three RBIs and a home run. Katie Prebble also finished with a pair of hits, finishing 2-for-3 on the day with two runs scored. Jordan Fabian drew three walks on the day to set a new South Carolina single-season record with 41, surpassing Dana Fulmer’s record from 1995.

The Wildcats came out of the gates fast, scoring two in the first, five in the second, and four in the third.

Carolina got on the scoreboard in the fourth. Prebble and Laneaux singled to start the inning. After a walk to Carlie Henderson, two outs later Prebble scored when the Kentucky left fielder dropped a fly ball off the bat of Leah Powell.

Kentucky added two more runs in the top of the fifth. The Gamecocks looked to extend the game as they began to rally in the bottom of the fifth. Fabian walked to lead off the inning and set a new program record. After Hannah Kumiyama singled, Fabian scored on a sacrifice fly by Riley Blampied. Prebble doubled down the left field line, to set up Laneaux for her third home run of the season, a three-run shot to left-center. Carolina was unable to push across another run to extend the game.

Starting pitcher Skylar Trahan took the loss, allowing three runs in an inning of work. Leah Powell threw the final 2 2-3 innings, allowing three runs but striking out five Wildcats.

The Gamecocks now turn their attention to the SEC Tournament, where they will face Texas A&M in the opening round on Tuesday, May 10. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
