Gamecocks Face Camels and Spartans Sunday
Columbia, S.C. – South Carolina women’s tennis hosts Campbell and UNC Greensboro Sunday for a double-header at the Carolina Tennis Center. The Gamecocks will face the Camels at noon before facing the Spartans at 4 p.m. This will be the first-ever meeting between South Carolina and each of its opponents.
Gamecock Notables
- South Carolina is on a two-match winning streak with wins over Clemson and Charleston Southern.
- Sarah Hamner set a new program record when she became the first Gamecock to be the No. 1 singles player in the ITA national rankings.
- Moving up in the rankings were No. 68 Elise Mills and No. 24 Hamner/Misa Malkin. No. 74 Ayana Akli and No. 48 Akli/Malkin also received rankings.
- Malkin was named the SEC Freshman of the week after notably clinching the 4-2 decision against Clemson in three sets. She also won her singles match against Charleston Southern.
- South Carolina is undefeated in doubles in home dual matches this season. It is also 8-3 in singles in home dual matches.
Scouting the Camels
- Campbell is 2-4 this season with an 0-4 record on the road.
- The Camels have 6-1 wins over both Georgetown and UNC Wilmington.
- Campbell most recently fell to Elon in a 4-3 decision, earning all three points in singles.
- The Camels have not secured the doubles point this season.
- The three freshmen and five sophomores are led by head coach Mike Stevens and graduate assistant coach Jorge Alfonzo.
Scouting the Spartans
- UNC Greensboro is 1-4 this season including an 0-2 record on the road.
- The Spartans’ sole win came in a 4-3 decision against North Carolina Central at home.
- Ahead of Sunday’s match, the Spartans will face off against App State.
- Head coach Paul Thomson and assistant coach Phillip Moore lead the three freshman and five returners on the roster.
