South Carolina Dominates Gamecock Shootout Day 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina won 11 of its 13 matches on day two of the Gamecock Shootout. In the day’s action, Elise Mills upset another ranked singles opponent and No. 50 Megan Davies downed a top-100 foe.
 
The day began with two rounds of doubles play, in which South Carolina took on Butler. No. 40 Megan Davies and Allie Gretkowski defeated Sara Linn and Natalie Boesing in a commanding 6-1 decision. Not far behind were Kendall Couch and Chloe Narboni who won their match against Logan White and Emma Beavin 6-2.
 
Ana Cruz and Gracie Mulville added to the Gamecocks’ wins in doubles with a 7-5 victory against Katie Beavin and Norah Balthazor. In a closely contested match, Elise Mills and Lindsay Tulenko took down Delaney Schurhamer and Veronika Bruetting 7-6 (7) to complete the South Carolina doubles sweep over Butler.
 
Doubles action continued with the Gamecocks notching two wins over SMU. No. 40 Davies and Gretkowski earned a 6-3 win against Lexi Keberle and Claudia Bartolome, while Cruz and Mullville downed Jackie Nylander and Katherine Jakeway 6-4. Closing out the day’s doubles contests, Couch and Cruz defeated Michigan’s Merri Kelly and Anca Craciun in a 6-4 decision.
 
In singles, South Carolina faced squad members of SMU and Michigan. Elise Mills faced her second ranked opponent of the weekend in No. 112 Hadley Doyle. Mills got to work and quickly blanked Doyle in the first set. Doyle fought back in the second set, but Mills came out on top to secure the 6-0, 6-4 win. Mills is now 2-0 against nationally ranked opponents.
 
Freshman Chloe Narboni took on Michigan’s Merri Kelly. Narboni dominated, claiming the first set 6-0. The second set was a tighter match, but the Gamecock newcomer came out on top 7-5 to take the win.
 
No. 50 Megan Davies played her match against No. 89 Jackie Nylander of SMU. After dropping the first set 6-2, Davies swiftly came back to take the second set 6-1. The third set featured multiple long points, but it was Davies who prevailed. She won the third set 6-4 to notch her first singles win of the weekend.
 
On the final court, Ana Cruz played a competitive match against SMU’s Nicole Petchey. They split sets with Petchey taking the first 7-5 and Cruz taking the second 6-2. The match was extremely close throughout the third set super tiebreak, but Cruz showed her endurance and earned the win in a 1-0 (11) decision.
 
South Carolina will finish the Gamecock Shootout on Sunday at 8 a.m. at the Carolina Tennis Center with one round of singles play.
